How could you recreate an underwater ecosystem through crochet? Last 12 October, a two-hour, coral-inspired crochet art workshop for young creatives and professionals explored and taught participants skills in creating amigurumi, the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. Facilitated by Sharon See, a crafts enthusiast and a former film and TV production designer, workshop participants created hyperbolic forms that resemble the aquatic life captured by exhibition artist Mel O’Callaghan in her video Centre of the Centre. The workshop echoed the advocacy vision of the ‘Crochet Coral Reef Project’ a global art dialogue which resides at the nexus of art, science, mathematics, environmentalism, and community practice.
