Curating in an Institutional Context
This lecture reflects on curating as a context-specific practice. Whether it is working independently or as part of an organization, each setting offers distinct challenges and opportunities. Being a curator within a large public institution, especially a collecting institution, is highly unique as it refocuses attention upon
research, knowledge building, and interpretation over exhibition making, and centers upon not only building the collection, but bringing it into contact with audiences. As M+, the new museum for visual culture being built in Hong Kong, builds its collection and prepares for its opening in 2020, what is the role of a curator in this kind of institutional context? What are the particular challenges and opportunities faced and how do these align with building awareness for art histories in the region?
Pauline J. Yao is Lead Curator of Visual Art at M+, the new museum for twentieth and twenty-first century visual culture being built in Hong Kong. She has held curatorial positions at theAsian Art Museum of San Francisco and worked as an independent curator and writer in Beijingfor six years, during which time she co-founded the storefront art space Arrow Factory.
