Another work of installation artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien will be brought to Manila by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD). The premiere of Julien’s film PLAYTIME will be held at the School of Design and Arts (SDA) Theater of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday, 28 October, 6:30pm. Another screening, open to the public, will be held the next day, 29 October, 2pm.
PLAYTIME is set across three cities defined by their role in relation to capital: London, a city transformed by the deregulation of the banks; Reykjavik, where the 2008 global financial crisis began; and Dubai, one of the Middle East’s burgeoning financial markets. Part documentary and part fiction, the work follows six main protagonists—the Artist, the Hedge Fund Manager, the Auctioneer, the House Worker, the Art Dealer, and the Reporter—interconnecting figures in the world of art and finance with the real stories of individuals deeply affected by the crisis and the global flow of capital.
The Philippine premier of PLAYTIME will be followed by a short talk by Isaac Julien. We have also
invited writer, curator and British film historian Mr. Mark Nash for a conversation with Mr. Julien on his
artistic practice, the talk will be on Wednesday, 29 October 2014.
Isaac Julien was born in 1960 in London, where he currently lives and works. While studying painting and fine art film at St Martin’s School of Art from which he graduated in 1984, Isaac Julien co-founded ‘Sankofa Film and Video Collective’ in which he was active from 1983–1992. He was also a founding member of Normal Films in 1991. His multi-screen film installations and photographs incorporate different artistic disciplines to create a poetic and uniqie visual language. He is also known for his multi-screen film installations and photographs. One of the objectives of Julien’s work is to break down the barriers that exist between different artistic disciplines, drawing from and commenting on film, dance, photography, music, theatre, painting and sculpture, and uniting these to construct a powerfully visual narrative. Thematically, much of his work directly relates to experiences of black and gay identity, including issues of class, sexuality, and artistic and cultural history.
Mark Nash is Professor, and former Head of Department of Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art, London. He is a curator, film historian and filmmaker, and specialises in contemporary fine art, moving image practices, avant-garde and world cinema. Nash has curated the film element of several international exhibitions including:Force Fields Phases of the Kinetic (2000); The Short Century: Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa, 1945–1994 (2001), and the Berlin Biennial (2004). He was co-curator of Documenta 11 (2002). He has authored the book Screen Culture Theory and Persistence of Memory.
