The screening on Women and Documentary Filmmaking in the Philippines put together by Dr Eloisa May Hernandez of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City puts a spotlight on the women documentary filmmakers who have been active in exposing various social issues. These three documentaries by and about women are a testament to the courage, strength, exceptional skill, and critical insights of these three women documentary filmmakers —Carla Ocampo, Alyx Arumpac, and She Andes.
Walang Rape sa Bontok (2014), Two Filipino women, both survivors of sexual abuse, immerse themselves in Bontoc culture to revalidate the discovery of renowned anthropologist June Prill-Brett on the absence of rape and rape culture in Bontok Igorot culture. Directed by Lester Valle, it is Carla Ocampo’s voice as head writer, editor, and sound that resonates. The film won Best Documentary in the Gawad URIAN from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
The documentary film Aswang (2019) by Alyx Arumpac is a brave portrayal of the gruesome extra-judicial killings (or EJKs) during the Duterte regime. It won the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts & Sciences Awards (FAMAS) Best Film (the first documentary to receive the award) and the Gawad URIAN for Best Film from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
Maria (2023) by She Andes, follows the journey of three women (Maria Deparine, MaryAnn Domingo, Maria Leonore Robredo) all named Maria, in their search for truth and quest for justice against during Duterte’s reign. Maria is the first full-length documentary featured in the 19 years of Cinemalaya and subsequently won Best Documentary at the 72nd Filipino Academy of Movie Arts & Sciences Awards (FAMAS).
