The Center Will Not Hold

Exhibition Run
7th March – 5 May 2019

The exhibition is a response to the zeitgeist of the contemporary moment, much like WB Yeats’ when he wrote his poem in the early 20th century. By inviting artists whose works speak to contemporary inflexions of power, and whose practices advocate for spaces that can effectively critique and comment on the state of the present, the exhibition proposes for ways to creatively subvert, engage, rethink, propose and resist a challenging present. Weary of weak democracies and the failure of politics to implement changes, of technologies that innovate faster than we can adapt to it, and a ravaged environment that can no longer sustain us, the exhibition looks to present this complexity through a web of utopian maps, disappearing politicians and deeply personal events that touch upon global resistance, all of which give us opportunities to navigate away from a center, and build our own systems, and imagine alternative futures.

The center will not hold is generously supported by Galleria Continua, Mao Ji-hong Arts Foundation, Yavuz Gallery and the Centre Pompidou. MCAD thanks our partners for their support in the production and facilitation of the show.

Curated by Joselina Cruz the exhibition includes works by Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, Shilpa Gupta, Kim Heecheon, Manny Montelibano and Tintin Wulia.

Artspace, Sydney, is an independent art centre which supports the presentation and production of contemporary art by Australian and international artists working across generations and expanded media. Established in 1983 and shaped through the 2000’s on the structure of a kunsthalle, Artspace is a non-collecting and curatorially-led organisation that encourages risk and critical thinking across residencies, exhibitions, publishing, public programs, education, co-commissioning, and international partnerships with peer institutions.

In this lecture, Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director, Artspace and a member of MCAD’s council of advisors will discuss Artspace’s expanded programming initiatives including rethinking residencies and strategies for considering the institution as a curated entity across all modes of audience engagement and artistic production.
