Shuruq Harb is the recipient of the 2019 Han Nefkens Foundation – Fundació Antoni Tàpies Video Art Production Award.
Shuruq Harb is an artist filmmaker, writer and editor. She is currently leading a programmed learning residency for Arab artists at MMAG Foundation in Amman, entitled Acts of Simulation. Harb’s practice is marked by her nuanced reflections on conflicts in contemporary society, drawn from her personal experiences of political strife in her native Palestine.
Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at the 6th Asian Art Biennial, in Taichung (2017); the New Museum in New York (2014); and the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011).
Harb’s new commission work entitled ‘The Jump’ will have its inception as part of the launch of Construction of Truths and is produced from a grant awarded by our exhibition partner the Han Nefkens Foundation.
The Han Nefkens Foundation – Fundació Antoni Tàpies Video Art Production Award appraises the work of emerging artists aged 40 and under, who live in West or Central Asia and have established a solid trajectory but not yet received recognition by international art institutions.
Harb was chosen for her capacity to generate knowledge out of a conflict-ridden lived reality. Her incisive filmmaking provides a critical reading of contemporary existence; a poetic reflection on image production and how this is used in conflict zones. Her singular practice is simultaneously nuanced and complex.
After MCAD, the work will be exhibited in four other institutions internationally: the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona; the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore; WIELS in Brussels and the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai.
