Appearance and/or Performance: The Body in Sports Lecture by Jerrecho Pituk

Discussions about  image-based contemporary culture point out the emphasis given to the body. Not surprising therefore is the resurgence of interest in physical culture. While in the past physical culture has focused on the ideal body, attention has also been given to its spiritual and philosophical component, and the strengthening of the connection between the body’s form and function.  Although the Vitruvian figure was influential, it was seen by Leonardo da Vinci  as stationary. His conceptualization of the human body was meant to “provoke thought about human movement” and  it shaped  the ideas pertaining to sports, games and physical exercises, according to sports and cultural studies professor John Hughson.

From the Renaissance until now, has the idea of the human body in sports changed? MCAD has invited Jerrecho Pituk  to explore this question by going into a discussion on body types,  body ideals for different sports and importance in terms of individual and/or team sports; included in the discussions are the modifications done for bodies which are not the ideal for specific sports or physical activities.

The talk will be at MCAD on 19 March,  Thursday, 2-4 pm. The talk is part of MCAD activities to complement the exhibition Vitruvian Figure which will run until 16 April 2015. The exhibition is the first solo exhibition of Paul Pfeiffer in the Philippines and Asia, and will feature old and new works that will give viewers an overview of his practice as well as development as an artist.

Mr. Pituk is a member of the Sports Science and Physical Educators of the Philippines, Inc. A graduate of MS Human Movement Science major in Exercise Science of the University of the Philippines, Mr. Pituk has written a physical fitness manual used by college students.
