MCAD Commons: Artists’ Film International Programme 2021

MCAD Commons is an exhibition programme of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila conceptualised as a programmed space removed from the museum’s main gallery space. Conceived as a project to continue the expanding activities of the museum, MCAD Commons takes MCAD’s singular programming to a larger audience allowing for creative development, ideas exchange, and support of the artistic process across the areas of research, art practice, and curatorial discourse to a wider audience and diverse field of practice.

For 2021, the MCAD Commons programme presents Artists’ Film International (AFI), a collaborative project featuring film, video and animation from around the world. Established by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2008, AFI pools the knowledge of twenty-one global partner organisations for each yearly iteration. Each organisation selects an exciting recent work by an artist from their region which is shared amongst the network. The program is adapted to every venue and is shown over the course of a year. This year AFI explores the various ways the world seeks to address the theme of care.

A selection of films from the AFI project for 2021 were presented in two off-site venues: Sine Pop in Cubao, Metro Manila and Project Space Pilipinas in Lucban, Quezon. Films were presented through on-site video installations as well as scheduled screenings.

Artists include Kiri Dalena, Mihály Stefanovicz, Rehana Zaman, Agnė Jokšė, Kenneth Tam, Julia Sbriller & Joaquin Wall, Victoria Verseau, Thania Petersen, Clare Langan, Patty Chang, Giulio Squillacciotti, Kerstin Honeit, and Himali Singh Soin.
